Two Dennis men were sentenced today in federal court for conspiracy to commit tax evasion and tax evasion arising out of a scheme to defraud the government at West Harwich Sunoco. United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and Douglas A. Bricker , Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation in New England, announced today that THOMAS P. STILLSON, age 51, and STEPHEN A. TWOMBLY, age 64, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge George A. O'Toole.

American-based ship operator, Pacific-Gulf Marine, Inc. (PGM), was sentenced today for deliberate acts of pollution involving a fleet of four ships, in violation of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. U.S. District Judge William M. Nickerson sentenced PGM to pay a $1 million criminal fine, $500,000 for community service and serve three years of probation under the terms of a rigorous Environmental Compliance Program (ECP), which is subject to court approval.

Federal immigration authorities today arrested 21 individuals in a targeted immigration action at Smithfield Packing Company's Tar Heel, N.C. plant. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency said the individuals would face various charges.

A Harris Interactive(R) study for France 24 and The International Herald Tribune conducted in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the USA, among adults ages 16 and over, shows that terrorism, religious fanaticism and global warming are major concerns. Adults in the UK and the USA view terrorism as the greatest challenge facing the planet today with 49% of Americans and 43% of the British citing it as a greater threat than global warming, religious fanaticism, war, and nuclear proliferation.

Three people were killed in traffic crashes investigated by State Police during the four-day New Year's holiday period, which started on Dec. 29 and ended on Jan. 1. All three of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related and two of the victims were not wearing seat belts, State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey B. Miller said today.

Eight people were killed in traffic crashes investigated by State Police during the four-day Christmas holiday driving period, State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey B. Miller said today. In addition to the eight fatalities, 319 people were injured in the 906 crashes to which troopers responded. Miller said 97 of the crashes, including three of the fatal crashes, were alcohol-related. Four of the eight people killed were not wearing a seat belt, he said.
