The search for a safe and effective microbicide to prevent HIV transmission in women advanced considerably today with the announcement of a euro 4.2 million grant by the European Commission to the International Partnership for Microbicides Belgium (IPM Belgium). The grant expands upon the European Commission's existing support of microbicides with a strong focus on engaging communities in clinical trials.

According to recent March of Dimes statistics, women of child-bearing age are missing a healthy dose of folic acid in their diets and the Grain Foods Foundation, with the help of Susie Castillo, is reminding women of the important role the vitamin plays in preventing birth defects during January's Birth Defects Prevention Month. Folic acid is needed for spinal cord development in the first three weeks of a pregnancy; often before a woman even knows she is pregnant.

A new government report on folate levels in women should be the trigger for action to double the fortification of this crucial B vitamin in the grain food supply, the March of Dimes said today. Since 1998, the Food and Drug Administration has required the addition of 140 micrograms of folic acid per 100 grams of grain to cereals, breads, pastas, and other foods labeled "enriched." The March of Dimes said today it would petition FDA to double that level to 280 micrograms.

However, a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Speaking of Women's Health shows that 98% of U.S. adult women who make health-related New Year's resolutions end up breaking them. To encourage women to start -- and stay -- on the path towards a healthier life, Wal-Mart SuperCenters and Sam's Club have teamed up with Speaking of Women's Health and Dr. Pamela Peeke to host "Get Started Today," a nationwide in-store event to motivate women to live well in 2007. The event, free to everyone, will take place on January 20th, 2007.

Women don't know the difference between bad cholesterol and good cholesterol, according to a Harris Interactive survey of 2,700 women, nearly a quarter of whom have cardiovascular disease, have suffered a heart attack or stroke, or have diabetes.

A new national survey finds that one common beauty ritual is quite literally "a pain" for many U.S. women.  The issue: using a razor to remove unwanted hair. Despite ads touting advances in razor technology, nearly 50% of U.S. women surveyed complain that results from shaving don't last as long at they would like.  Over one-third of women -- a total of 36% -- commonly suffer from nicks, cuts, burns or rashes when shaving. On average, American women reported cutting themselves while shaving at least every other week.

amfAR has released an issue brief demonstrating a close connection between gender-based violence and HIV infection.  The New York-based AIDS research foundation is calling for resources to develop, test, and implement behavioral, biomedical, and social interventions to address violence as both a cause and a consequence of HIV infection. amfAR is sponsoring a symposium on sexual violence and HIV/AIDS among women at the 3rd International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment in Rio de Janeiro on July 25, 2005.
