The first newspaper for Europe to come from Germany, "The German Times," launches simultaneously with the German EU-Parliamentary Presidency. Executive Editor Theo Sommer is today handing over the first copy of the monthly newspaper to Hans-Gert Pöttering, the new President of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, with German Chancellor and current President of the Council of Europe, Angela Merkel, and Martin Schulz, head of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament in attendance. In the evening he will present "The German Times" in London.

Workers at the Chinese Daily News in Monterey Park, Calif., won a big victory as a federal jury awarded them a multi-million dollar judgment for the newspaper's willful violations of federal and state wage and hour laws. The jury verdict in the class action lawsuit found that the Chinese Daily News violated California provisions on overtime pay and meal and rest periods, as well as the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.

The Financial Times will launch 'The A-Train', a new column by Chrystia Freeland, US Managing Editor of the Financial Times, this Saturday, January 13, 2007. 'The A-Train' will be published every Saturday in the Weekend section of the Financial Times, and is a social observation of the American upper-middle class, with a personal twist and a serious core.

A majority of press operators at the Los Angeles Times voted today for Teamster representation. After a six-month organizing campaign, workers came together Thursday and Friday to cast their votes which were counted today. "This is an important step for the press operators at the Los Angeles Times," said Jim Hoffa, General President of the Teamsters Union. "With all of the uncertainty over the LA Times' ownership over the past several months, our ability to bargain strong contracts gives these new members strength in the workplace."

The McClatchy Company today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to sell the Star Tribune newspaper of Minneapolis, MN to Avista Capital Partners for $530 million. In addition, McClatchy expects a future cash tax benefit equal to approximately $160 million related to the sale. The purchase covers the newspaper as well as other publications and websites related to the newspaper. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2007.
