Study Finds More Than $1 Billion in Public Funds to Improve Schools Yielded PDF Print E-mail

Approximately $1.25 billion in state public education funding provided to schools to help improve student academic performance has yielded little if any academic improvement, even though these schools met the state Academic Performance Index (API) requirements to exit the improvement program as successful. This analysis comes just as the state is set to carry out the agreed upon terms of last year's SB 1133 (Torlakson) and pour nearly $3 billion more into a similar program.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Tuscola Intermediate School District, Caro, Mich., to help retrofit school buses with diesel emission controls and to help buy biodiesel fuel for Tuscola and three other nearby school districts.

It's no secret being a K-12 teacher in North Carolina can be tough financially. The National Education Association (NEA) reports the state ranks 27th in the nation in teacher pay. Yet, many North Carolina teachers dig deep into their own pockets to fund creative lessons and projects for their students. One NEA survey found it isn't unusual for a teacher to spend more than $1,000 a year of his or her own money to supplement classroom instruction.

Capital One Financial's (NYSE:COF) fifth annual back-to-school shopping survey shows that parents are missing the perfect opportunity to talk to their kids about making the most of their shopping dollars.  This year's survey finds that more than 83 percent of high school and middle school students expect their parents to join them on back- to-school shopping trips, but an overwhelming 91 percent say their parents have not taken the time to discuss their back-to-school finances with them. The survey also finds that nearly 60 percent of parents will spend more than $125 per child on back to school costs this year, yet only a quarter of them are taking the time to discuss back to school budgeting.
